AHMEDABAD:
An opinion poll on India's brightest talent from 25 business schools
shows that Narendra Modi is the overwhelming favourite as the most
preferred choice for being the Prime Minister with 71% of the
respondents saying he is best suited to lead the country.
Arvind Kejriwal is a distant second with 15% of the votes. The others category gets 4% of the votes. Rahul Gandhi gets 2% of the votes. The poll shows that only 57% of students from leading institutes will vote in this election.
The survey was carried out on 257 students from India's top business schools including nine Indian Institutes of Management, the Indian School of Business and Management Development Institute among others.
"In what could be bad news for Modi, out of all 71% respondents who want Modi as PM, only 59% are going to vote in this election," says the survey by insideiim.com, a venture by an IIM alumnus.
Surprisingly, while only 61% say they will vote for the BJP, 71% back Modi and the same number back a BJP-led NDA coalition. Modi and the BJP are more popular among the younger voters as 76% of respondents aged 26 and below prefer Modi as PM as compared to less than 70% for ages 26 and above.
"Only 57% of the respondents said that they will vote in this election as the remaining 27% said they cannot vote because they work in a constituency different from where they have been registered as voters, 7% each said they had not registered as a voter, 2% said they don't like any party or are not interested in politics and the remaining 7% said that they would be travelling at that time," said Ankit Doshi, one of the founders of insideiim.com.
The survey also shares that 82% of respondents feel dissatisfied with the UPA-II government. Almost half the respondents - 49% - feel that UPA-II's performance has been very poor. Another 33% says it was unsatisfactory.
For these future managers of the country, good governance is the most important issue, followed by economy. Corruption ranks third, followed by women's safety and employment. Foreign policy and secularism are the least important among the options provided.
