NEW DELHI: The last time BJP held its national executive meet in Goa, Gujarat CM Narendra Modi had hit the headlines.
He is likely to do so again when the party holds its conclave in the coastal state on June 8 and 9. In 2002, he made news when the then Prime minister AB Vajpayee's decision to seek his resignation in the wake of the Gujarat riots was rejected and this time he again looks set to overshadow the party's formal agenda.
Modi, who survived Vajpayee's call for resignation and went on to win two assembly polls, is expected to hog the spotlight by virtue of being the frontrunner for being named the party's PM candidate. Although the sticky issue of announcing the PM candidate does not figure on the schedule of the national executive, a few members, mostly from UP, are planning to raise the issue at the meet, a leader from the state told ET.
The leader, who did not wish to be named, said the group wants the party to come clear on the issue since cadres and voters had been left confused with the central leaders speaking in multiple voices. While LK Advani wants Nitin Gadkari to head a poll panel for assembly polls, Sushma Swaraj has said Advani's name will also be discussed; Varun Gandhi has backed party chief Rajnath Singh's candidature while Uma Bharti has said a crowd-puller need not necessarily be a PM candidate.
But the BJP brass continues stick to its line that the party's parliamentary board will decide on the matter. "This national executive is important in the backdrop of the political developments. People are looking for a change. BJP has to take the responsibility of projecting an alternative to the Congress-led UPA. The party has to give direction to its workers," said senior leader Venkaiah Naidu.
Modi is, however, expected to dominate the proceedings. Besides the opening speech by party president Rajnath Singh and the concluding remarks by Advani, there will be speeches by Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, the leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, respectively.#
