HOW A CONGRESS VOTER SEES THE BJP TODAY

An old friend whose family had been traditionally Congress voters had this to tell me this morning: “We have decided to vote for the BJP this time only because Narendra Modi would be anointed the Party’s prime ministerial candidate. Apart from the Congress revealing itself to be just a criminal syndicate which provides a platform for any candidate from any party despite undesirable antecedents as long he has chances of winning an election, Modi’s clear and unambiguous stance on many things and his excellent track record as Gujarat Chief Minister in every facet of governance has convinced me that Modi is India’s sole answer to all its immediate problems.”

He then sighed,”Poor BJP and Narendra Modi. I don’t think the BJP itself wants Modi as the next prime minister of India. Just look at who all are stacked up against him. His own party stalwart L.K.Advani is continuing to sabotage his chances along with trouble makers like a non-entity like an over the hill actor Shatrughan Sinha* and Advani’s ‘girlfriend’( his words not mine, reflecting what many think but may not utter) Sushma Swaraj what they are upto. Then you have Shivraj Singh Chouhan who no one outside Madhya Pradesh has heard of. He has brandished thousands of posters all over his state without Modi’s face just to highlight he is not for Modi as PM despite Modi being the BJP’s most well-known poster boy today. With the desperate Congress party and their retainers in the media gunning for Modi using every government agency to implicate him for any false or otherwise irregularity and a conniving media playing it up, was it not the time for the BJP to show an united face against such an onslaught? The message people like me are getting is that the BJP has more enemies within it than outside. Poor Modi, this reckless coterie of Advani instigated self-destructive forces are working to a plan to ensure that the BJP doesn’t get more than 100 Lok Sabha seats in the next elections so that they can gleefully point towards their self-fulfilling prophecy of ‘See we told you Modi would be a liability compared to Advaniji’.

“The Indian electorate is acutely allergic to any squabbling party or combines where the chain of command is amorphous and subject to constant challenge from within. They want to get along with their day to day lives after a stable government is sworn in rather than a chaotic and bickering group disrupting smooth governance every now and then. This is the very reason why the electorate has been rejecting the “Khichri” governments after the bitter lessons they have learnt from earlier experience. Now the danger lies in the fact that despite the dismal performance of the Congress-UPA on every front, they would appear to be atleast a combine where bickering would be absent as its high command has a vice like grip on the Congress mob. No amount of screaming that Congress is a dynasty set up for the Nehru-Gandhi clan to keep looting India and Sonia Gandhi’s Italian origins is going to wash when it comes to choosing a cohesive unit over a fractious one.

"There are few things the BJP should realize. India is still majorly feudal due to which a ‘royal’ family still finds tremendous attraction across the country. Secondly, due to the popular perception that the loot in millions of crores is from the Central government's funds and not directly from anyone’s pockets, most Indians feel as if the money being looted is someone else’s and not theirs. Moreover, the Congress being the oldest and longest ruling party knows how to handle power better than all its rivals and it is totally amoral and cynical when it comes to retaining power by hook or by crook. It has become too Teflon coated to the extent that no amount of calumny or media exposes or adverse Supreme Court judgments or strictures by CAG and other independent agencies have any effect on its collective psyche. Like Arjuna aiming for the fish’s eye at Draupadi’s swayambara, the Congress uses sham, daam, danda, bhed, to retain power in order that its individual members can make humongous amounts of illegal wealth, keeping a cut for themselves and passing on the rest to the High Command, a trend that was introduced by Indira Gandhi and since honed to perfection by her descendants. It is this huge corpus that keeps Congressmen together even forsaking their own egos and self-respect while lying prostrate before the dynasty.

“Now look at the BJP. It has positioned itself on to a moral high ground of honesty and integrity making it an easy target of the Congress and sham secular parties to sling mud on it for even the minutest transgression with their retainers in the media taking it up on 24X7 basis as tarnishing the BJP’s image as it is both a paying as well as a TRP enhancing activity on prime time TV. And the Indian public relishes gossip and seeing others squirm in discomfort in any exercise at washing anyone’s dirty linen in public. An old warhorse like Delhi based Advani has been around in politics far too long not to realize all this but he is today using his vast experience to destroy the BJP from within using his cat’s paws of a few younger acolytes who want to commit ‘Sati’ along with him in his political self-immolation bid in his twilight years. If the BJP gives in to Advani’s blackmail and toes his line in order to keep him placated and commits the monumental blunder of keeping Modi out of the Prime Ministerial race, then the catastrophe that will hit the party could destroy it and set its recovery back by few decades. The tremendous groundswell generated in favour of the BJP that has been generated after Modi’s rise to centre stage would recoil on the party like a tsunami of unforgiving collective anger from the millions who now find Modi, a household name today pan-India, uncompromisingly irreplaceable if the party were to make any blunders on this score. As the voters are averse to choosing any kedgeree formation at the Centre, you can look forward to UPA-III with Manmohan Singh as India’s longest serving Prime Minister once again. The fact that this will fortify his oft repeated gleeful jibes at Advani remaining “forever the BJP’s prime minister in waiting” is entirely lost on a blindly ambitious Advani in his dotage.

“I also have pity for Rajnath Singh who is grappling with such a hydra-headed monster that the BJP has now become. Add to his woes a rampantly partisan and hostile media, the hounding by various subservient to the government agencies like CBI implicating those close to Modi, a no-holds-barred effort to appease the Muslim community even at the cost of national security, the rolling out of the scam generating but populist food security bill, one can feel that Rajnath has his work cut out for him.”

“So what could be the possible solution for helping the BJP in getting out of this morass its own party leaders have landed it in?” I asked.

“The immediate action the BJP must take is to announce Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate to cut off any further drift or mischief in this regard. Thereafter, anyone acting or speaking against this can be held liable for disciplinary action for defying the party fiat. A young and dedicated person can be appointed to discreetly keep tabs on Advani and his group to ferret out any possible unholy nexus with the Congress or others and then confront them with the irrefutable evidence of exposing them in the public domain. There mustn’t be any compromise in isolating Advani and his companions who have now become a gangrenous part that will need to be amputated if the infection is to be stopped from spreading to the rest of the body of the party and tainting the party’s image in the public’s eye any longer. BJP must form few separate groups of spokespersons who will be tasked with exclusively scuttling Congress’s releasing red herrings like “BJP is a communal party” etc., for diverting public attention away from its own monumental acts of omissions and commissions over the last ten years. Another group can keep exposing the Congress’s lip service paid to so-called Muslim welfare. Another group can be assigned with projecting the BJP’s plans that it will implement when it comes to power. In other words, the BJP must make “Offence is the best defense” its “mool” mantra and avoid falling into any trap laid by the Congress to put it on the defensive. With the Congress ruling continuously for the last ten years, it should be the Congress which ought to be on the back foot.

"Lastly, if the Congress were to suddenly announce an early election it could find the BJP in doldrums with people like Advani and his group going all out to destroy the party from within when it finds itself in disarray. That is my greatest fear of the moment."
