Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has time and again proved that there is no match for his popularity in the real world as well as the virtual world. He is perhaps the only leader in India who can galvanize thousands of people to throng the roads to just catch a glimpse of him wherever he goes as well emulate similar frenzy on the social media as well. This is a very distinctive achievement which reiterates that although he is a mass leader firmly associated with people on the ground, he is tech savvy too, utilizing technology and social media to accentuate governance initiatives and connect easily with people from different parts of the country.
The latest feather in the cap comers from Pinstorm in the form of a ranking called India Influencers 2.0. This initiative from Pinstorm tries to gauge the influence of individuals and brands on the social media. The version 2.0 of India Influencers uses 3 reputed measurement services Klout, PeerIndex and Kred. This ranking uses weighted aggregates of the three scores. So what results did it give? Let’s have a look !
Narendra Modi stands second in the list of Indian Residents, next only to the venerable The Dalai Lama. In fact he is the only Indian Politician in the top 10 of the list which is dominated by film stars. The closest a politician gets to Narendra Modi is Shashi Tharoor at number 11. Our Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, carries on his lack of influence in real world to the virtual world and stands at no 43. He is sandwiched between Shilpa Shetty and Poonam Pandey.
While Narendra Modi has an India Influencer Score of 90.1, which is second best only to the Dalai Lama whose score is 92.6, Shashi Tharoor and our PM Manmohan Singh recorded scores of 88.3 and 84.9 respectively. Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Priyanka Chopra, Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit , Salman Khan and Sachin Tendulkar are the other individuals in the top 10.
In the previous version of the rankings, Narendra Modi was at the 12th position in terms of influence on Social Media with a score of 71.86. Thus his ascent to the number two position in the latest rankings with a score of 90.1 mark a significant improvement in his social media influence, as per the ranking.
Narendra Modi has a little over 17 lakh followers on Twitter and his followers are growing exponentially month after month. He tweets regularly on issues pertinent to national issues and also conveys his opinion other issues as well. He is active on Facebook too, with over 18 lakh likes to his official page. Over 5,81,000 people have him in their circles on Google +. This also proves that Narendra Modi is not a single social network wonder. He also has a Youtube channel where the much sought after videos of his speeches and media bytes are updated regularly. Another positive aspect of Modi’s social media activities is that it has been controversy free and that he has adopted an issue based approach on the social media.
Narendra Modi is well known for his digital outreach. He was the first politician to do a Google Hangout in India. This Hangout not only helped the people spread all across the world to interact with their favourite leader, but also smashed all records in terms of viewership. About 1,66,000 clicks generated on Narendra Modi’s website www.narendramodi.in during the day of the Hangout.
Over 70,000 tweets poured in from all over while the Hangout was in progress. The Hangout has been viewed by over 7,00,000 times on Youtube.
Behind this active usage of social media and engaging with people is a grand vision of Shri Narendra Modi that he has achieved wonderfully over the last decade. Narendra Modi has not only pioneered the usage of modern technology but he has integrated the same in the working of the Government to ensure maximum progress of the people!
He has been awarded abundantly for his use of technology. The Computer Society of India conferred him with the E-Ratna Award in 2011 for contribution in E-Governance and the ICT initiatives at the Chief Minister’s Office have won Award of Excellence at the CSI Nihilent e-Governance Awards 2011. The e-Governance strategies and ICT initiatives of the CMO also won the ‘Best Government to Citizen Initiative of the Year Award’ at the eIndia summit .
Narendra Modi sees E-Governance as ‘Easy, effective and economic’ Governance. Some initiatives of the Gujarat Government that have made path breaking use of technology include the ‘E-Gram Vishwa Gram’ Initiative of providing broadband connectivity to the villages of Gujarat and eMPOWER that trains people of Gujarat with essential knowledge of computer and IT.
The state Government’s flagship grievance redressal initiative SWAGAT (State Wide Attention on Grievances by Application of Technology) has wonderfully integrated technology to solve people’s problems.
In times when a large number of Indian politicians are still averse to technology, let alone interacting with people on social networking sites, Narendra Modi’s embrace of technology and social media comes as a breath of fresh air!
