In
an alarming observation, a division bench of the Delhi High Court has
said that every day 1.7 crore Delhiites consume fruits and vegetables
unfit for human consumption.The high court on Wednesday termed
the findings of an expert committee on the status of pesticide residue
in food commodities "alarming" and sought a detailed report from the
government on steps being taken to control it.
A division bench of acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Sidharth Mridul, which was taking note of the report on pesticide content submitted by the courtappointed expert committee, has also directed the Delhi government to set up, within four weeks, a Pesticide Residue Management Cell (PRMC) under the control of the food commissioner for effective handling of the issue.
"This is an alarming situation. We, including the committee members who prepared the report, are consuming pesticides," the HC said. It also directed the By Mail Today Bureau in New Delhi Delhi government and the Union Agriculture Ministry to take long and short-terms measures to minimise the harm. The court also wants the state and the Centre to publicise the short-term measures and dos and don'ts suggested by the expert committee to minimise the presence of banned pesticides residue in fruits, cereals, vegetables and other eatables.
The court wants the Centre and Delhi government to file action taken reports and directed the state government to conduct periodic checks of vegetables and fruits for pesticides. The next hearing is on April 15.
