Manmohan’s Mister Clean myth and why we should not believe it

By Niticentral Staff on May 16, 2013

Rajya Sabha nomination
Manmohan's Mister Clean myth and why we should not believe itWe are told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh does not own any land, agricultural or non-agricultural. He does own a 1996 model Maruti 800 car and has movable assets, including fixed deposits, of over Rs 3.87 crore. He also has two residential properties as per the affidavit submitted on Wednesday along with his nomination papers seeking a fifth term in the Rajya Sabha from Assam. With a total income of Rs 40,51,964 during 2011-12, the financial year for which he filed his last income tax returns, the Prime Minister has stated that his total movable assets are valued at Rs 3,87,63,188, while his wife Gursharan Kaur has movable assets of Rs 20,27,902.

Despite all this projected frugality, there is no denying the Prime Minister’s complicity in multiple scams worth lakhs of crores of rupees. After 2G scam, Coalgate scam, MNREGA, Railgate scam, mining scam, CWG scam, chopper scam, and many more, what more is coming our way? Does Manmohan Singh have any credibility left at all? Manmohan can’t possibly pretend innocence after the recent CBI admission that the Prime Minister’s Office played a part in the changing of the investigative agency’s Coalgate report. It is simply no longer possible to keep up the pretence that Manmohan is Mister Clean. If people like A Raja are guilty of looting the nation, Manmohan must be held held responsible for facilitating that loot. He can’t escape responsibility.

Following are three in-depth conversations on the corruption malaise that ails the Congress (and as a result, the nation) and how Manmohan Singh’s Mister Clean image is not something we can continue to believe in without irreparably damaging our economy.
