Needling is Subramanian Swamy's pastime

NEW DELHI: Subramanian Swamy's profile received yet another boost when the Supreme Court ruled that the permission to prosecute a public servant cannot be delayed beyond four months.
This important verdict, which will doubtlessly earn Swamy much mileage as an anti-corruption crusader, comes ahead of another important case he is fighting, one that might be more satisfying to him personally in the event of a favourable verdict. SC is soon set to rule on his petition to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate home minister P Chidambaram's role in the events that led to the 2G-spectrum scandal.

Swamy was at his scandalous best while thanking supporters on Twitter soon after the verdict. "Many thanks to all patriotic tweeples (people on Twitter) who kept faith and to God for the decision today. Now I may bypass Vadra and go straight to Sonia," he wrote. The Janata Party president has been claiming on Twitter for a while that he has incriminating evidence against Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra and will come out with the same at the opportune time.

Given to outlandish statements and yet capable of wide-ranging feats of intellectual ability-he holds a PhD from Harvard university, has published in peer-reviewed economics journals and used to teach at the Harvard summer school till recently-his hard-earned legal victories serve to lend legitimacy to the patently absurd claims he reels off to an admiring constituency on Twitter.

At various points, he has claimed that Sonia Gandhi is trying to get him killed, Rahul Gandhi has sought psychiatric treatment in the US and the UK, and he has details of the Swiss accounts in which the Gandhi family stashed its wealth. However, Swamy has never been able to prove any of his allegations but that doesn't seem to matter to his followers on the internet, whose material and moral support seems to fuel his many battles.

Swamy's fight with the Congress president dates back to 1999, when for a brief period, the two joined hands against a common cause - the ruling National Democratic Alliance government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Swamy, who was then a close ally of AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa, hosted a famous tea party in Delhi, where Jayalalithaa and Sonia Gandhi met, subsequent to which, AIADMK pulled the rug from under the Vajpayee government. But Swamy fell out of favour with both Jayalalithaa and Gandhi subsequently, leaving him in a prolonged political wilderness that he seems to be just climbing out of.

Swami's legal activism in the 2G case and the embarrassment he has single-handedly caused to UPA government is said to have impressed sections of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which will have greater reason now to find a way to accommodate Swamy and his eccentricities.
