MUMBAI:
Members of the intelligence community and senior police officers
tracking don Dawood Ibrahim's syndicate have hailed the appointment of
former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Ajit Doval as the national
security adviser (NSA).
Doval had been involved in an IB operation to eliminate Dawood. The former intelligence czar is known for his knowledge about the underworld, specifically Dawood and his aides, said a ex-IB officer.
Dawood is a wanted accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case and several other murder cases pending against him in India. The don, who reportedly resides in Pakistan and spearheads his gang's activities in India, is said to have considerable clout among politicians and police officers. "Doval's appointment boosts the confidence of ground-level officer working against the gangster," added the IB officer.
During the poll campaign, former Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde claimed that India was working to bring back Dawood. While commenting on Shinde's statement, Modi had said that such details should not be discussed in the media. "Modi had indicated that he wanted to tackle the issue without publicizing it," the officer said.
According to a confidential US cable leaked by Wikileaks, the IB wanted to dispatch Chhota Rajan aide Vicky Malhotra to kill Dawood during his daughter's wedding with cricketer Javed Miandad's son in 2005. Doval was said to be travelling with Malhotra to discuss the details in Delhi when a Mumbai crime branch team working under the direction of a deputy commissioner intercepted the two. Malhotra was arrested in a murder case and the operation had to be aborted. It transpired that Dawood had got wind of the operation and sabotaged the bid.
