The Chronicles of Corruption

'Corruption' is one word that is spreading like wildfire among the folklore of Indians owing to the plethora of scams that had unravelled since the last three years. The foremost among them is the '2G Scam' which in itself has paralleled Mahabharatha as a means to fascinate children by the parents and also became an imperative in the General Discussion of the populace. Besides '2G', other monstrous scams that hogged the limelight are IPL, Commonwealth Games scam, Adarsh Housing scam, Cash for Vote and Mining scams and the list goes on and on. The aftermath of 'Coal-gate' scam is currently experienced, and the KG Basin and Thorium scams are already in the pipeline and ready to explode.

According to Dr. Subramanian Swamy - the crusader against corruption and the one-man army who fought against all the odds in the 2G Spectrum case - "Corruption generally is any inducement, or bribe, to do or not to do anything that the bribe giver wants from the bribe taker who otherwise will not do or will do". And so, corruption is inherently bad for the efficient functioning of the economy. It weakens the motive to perform and discourages relying on merit to be successful.

In this connection, it is natural for any mortal to think of the rationale why we became so corrupt. India, at one time, was often praised as the most honest nation in the world by foreign travellers to India like Vasco da Gama, Hiuen Tsang, Fa Hien and others, in their chronicles. A keen examination of our history shows that the genesis arises out of the Islamic rule and the subsequent British rule stimulated the aggravation of graft among the inhabitants of the country.

India was invaded by Islamic rulers by deceitful means and the brutal carnage of people for several years and their policies like 'Hindu-only' tax instilled a sense of fear and submissiveness among its people. Few lamb like people, in order to survive peacefully, killed their own conscience and honesty and yielded to those wicked acts. Some of these 'lambs' even converted to Islam. Having thus ruled India for more than eight centuries, these invaders and their off-spring injected some wickedness and dishonesty into the society. Though not the prime reason, it is definitely the nadir of the 'Graph of Corruption' in India.

This was followed by a subtle but poisonous rule of the British, who, in order to establish their hegemony practiced the art of 'Divide and Rule' to perfection. Their inducement by palm-greasing the officers of various kingdoms to become traitors has transformed into "harming the same society you are living in" of the modern era, which was the underlying repercussion of corruption. Their prejudice towards their advocates, Christians, the English-Speaking et cetera and their patronage to the dishonest people infused the urge to get benefited by flattery and deception there by loosing morals. Thus, the British conquest for colonization paved the way to the 'Highway of Corruption'.

Now coming to the Post-Independence era of self rule, we started experiencing the repercussions of the last thousand years of filthy rule. All immorality that had pervaded our brains transformed into multitude of ways. Our freedom is blurred, because, our corrupted minds were still under the shadow of 'outsiders'. Jawaharlal Nehru, a self proclaimed 'Pandit' who was obsessed with the Soviet Union's ideology of 'Socialism', was one of the main culprits for the rampancy of corruption in India.

His promotion of socialism as our savior to attain sustainable development resulted in the creation of 'Licence Raj'. It was the end product of India's decision to have a planned economy where all aspects of economy are controlled by the state. Under 'Licence Raj', goods and services can be produced by private parties only by acquiring licences, and the quantity of goods that can be produced was determined by the government, not by the market demand. It is weird but what is bizarre is the number of licences that had to be acquired to start production. Around 80 government agencies had to be 'satisfied' to procure licences and once granted they have to obey to the diktats of the Government.

Centuries of infused immorality took its ugly turn. The Red-tapists had to be bribed heavily for granting the licences and any other undue benefits. This resulted in wide scale corruption and it transcended across the country and the system gradually. Four decades of soviet boot-licking made the country go to dogs. Though India took to Market based economy in the mid 1990s, it was too late. By then, Corruptness has become one of the fundamental elements in Indian blood, the other being haemoglobin.

Even today, we are ruled by foreigners. Many a 'Singh' of India has become a poodle of 'her' majesty. A catholic headed government is indulging in wide scale corruption flouting all the rules and crushing any resistance. It is no wonder as authoritative Catholics indulge in corrupt acts of induced conversions.

Today's corruption is so ubiquitous that it is a nightmare even to describe and causes severe anguish during the presentation. When the ruling 'High Command' is corrupt, so will be the people of the country and these corrupted minds in turn elect a corrupt High Command, and hence I conclude this article with an adage and its extension of mine - "Yatha raja, thatha praja. Yatha praja, thatha raja".
